Comandante is, for most buyers, one product. The C40 is the hand grinder that filter brewers have used as a reference for years, and when a new hand grinder is reviewed, the C40 is usually the thing it is compared to.

The current generation is the MK4. Its burrs are what the company calls Nitro Blade: a high-nitrogen martensitic steel chosen to take and hold a sharp edge. They are not large, and the C40 is not fast. What the price buys is the cut, and the clean, well-separated filter cup that has kept the grinder in that reference position.

The rest of the design is conservative. Adjustment is internal: you take off the catch jar and turn a click wheel under the burr, counting from zero. The knob is wood, the jars are glass, and the whole thing feels built to last rather than to be convenient.

That is the main thing to know before buying. There is no outside dial, so switching between methods means counting clicks every time, and anyone who changes grind several times a day will find that tedious. Glass jars do not survive a stone floor. And the standard clicks are too coarse for comfortable espresso: Comandante sells the Red Clix accessory, which halves the step size, for owners who want to go there. It works, but it turns a filter grinder into a filter grinder that can also make espresso, which is not the same as an espresso grinder.

The C40 suits someone who brews pour-over or a V60 most days, cares about clarity in the cup, and does not mind paying for it. It is the top pick for filter in the hand grinder guide, where it is set against cheaper grinders with bigger burrs. More filter options are on the filter grinders hub.
